From 1901, an historic photograph of the Beaumont, Texas SPINDLETOP Oil Field. A wood derrick was placed over a geologic salt dome here ... and no one knew what to expect. The Lucas Gusher ejected more oil higher .. and more oil barrels than all of the other wells in the United States combined. This set off an unprecedented black oil gold rush in Texas that exists to this day. Three of the largest American Oil Companies all originated in their early forms at this oil field.
