The symbol used for many firefighter emblems is commonly referred to as a Maltese Cross, although it is more properly named a St Florian Cross. St Florian is a patron saint of firefighters. The Maltese cross is similar in design, but has inwardly pointed edges on the 4 protrusion. International Firefighter's Day (IFFD) is celebrated on May 4th, which is also the Feast day of St Florian.
