The pride of Britain's Royal Navy, the battlecruiser HMS Hood, photographed in 1924. The "Mighty Hood" was considered virtually invincible in the minds of the British people. But the relatively light hull armor, a common weakness of many pre-WWII warship designs, was her Achilles heel. In May 1941, she was sunk when a shell from the German battleship Bismarck, penetrated her aft magazine causing a mammoth explosion. Of her 1418 man crew, only three survived.
