Dazzle camouflage was a ship painting scheme invented by British artist Norman Wilkinson and used in WWI. It’s purpose was to confuse enemy observers, making the ship’s size, speed and direction of travel difficult to determine. Edward Wadsworth, another British artist, who spent much of WWI transferring dazzle designs onto Allied ships, painted "Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool" in 1919.
