Candy canes are classic Christmas sweets, traditionally peppermint flavored but nowadays can be any flavor at all. The origin of these hard candy sticks goes back to German folklore. In the 17th century, the choirmaster of the church in Cologne asked a local candy maker to create some sweets for children, to keep them from fidgeting during Christmas Eve service. These were made as sticks, each with a hook at the end, to resemble shepherds' crooks of staffs, and thus connect the candy to the nativity scene. The white part of the candy was said to represent the purity of the baby Jesus. This story may or may not be true, as it can't be verified. The first recorded association of candy canes and Christmas was in 1874, about the time these sweet delights were known to be hung on Christmas trees; but one way or another, candy canes and their easily identifiable stripes have been a favorite for many generations.
