Bold candy cane colors and upbeat design brightens up any gathering. Candy canes are traditional Christmas sweets, originally peppermint flavored but nowadays can be any flavor at all. Here's a bit of Christmas trivia! The origin of candy canes goes back to European folk history. In the 17th century, the choirmaster of the church in Cologne, Germany, asked a local candy maker to create some hard sweet candy sticks for the children, to keep the kids from fidgeting during Christmas Eve church service. To justify the giving of candy during church service, the candymaker made each stick with a hook at the end, to look like shepherds' crooks of staffs, and thus related to the nativity scene. This tale may or may not be true, as it can't be verified. The first recorded association of candy canes and Christmas was in 1874, about the time these sweet delights were known to be hung on Christmas trees; but one way or another, candy canes and their easily identifiable stripes have been a favorite for many generations.
