J.Reuben Clark, Jr. the namesake of BYU's law school, was Ambassador to Mexico, the Under Secretary of State, and an LDS general authority. He was a tireless and sometimes unappreciated champion of the Constitution at a time when the US was charging into New Deal socialism. And golly, hasn't that just worked out great? At the time the LDS First Presidency did what tax exemption laws today will not now allow them to do, and advised church members not to elect FDR. A resounding 70% of Utah ignored their counsel and voted for him. And hasn't that just worked out great? Clark was staunchly against the foreign adventurism, meddling and empire building that will surely be our downfall. He advocated, like George Washington in his farewell address and like all of the Founding Fathers, an international neutrality without entangling alliances and a strictly domestic, defensive use of our troops. LDS have been so Republican aligned for so long that they've forgotten there are some enormous differences between the Republican Platform and the Gospel Platform. This is chief among them - wars are to be waged strictly defensively. The so called "Bush Doctrine" of preemptive war is morally indefensible and ultimately suicidal. The moment a nation becomes an empire, it is ultimately doomed, it's just a matter of time.
