The middle image in this triptych is the earliest surviving portrait of Jesus Christ. Painted around 1400 years ago, this image is located in the Monastery of St. Catherine in the Sinai, Egypt. It was painted with a wax technique known as encaustic. The two sides of the face of the middle image are asymmetrical, probably for the sake of both realism and theological concerns. In my digital manipulation (the left and right images of the poster) we can see what happens to the portrait in creating two perfectly symmetrical (and diametrically different) images of Jesus: the left one is very human (Jesus), the right the divine judge (Christ) at the second coming.
