Supermoons of 2019 Super Moon Events Napkins Affiliate icon

A trifecta of lunar sky show events is on tap for the year 2019. There will be 3 supermoons this year, starting on January 21 with a rare Super Blood Moon. This is a total lunar eclipse that coincides with the Moon at its closest approach to the Earth or orbital perigee. The blood red color is an effect of the Sun’s light passing through the Earth’s atmosphere and refracting back toward the Moon during the eclipse when Earth’s shadow blocks normal lunar illumination. The January full moon is also known as the Full Wolf Moon. Legend has it that this name comes from wolves howling outside villages at night from hunger in colonial times. Two other supermoons occur on February 19 and March 21. These full moons will look larger than usual but not exhibit the eclipse coloring.
