New York's 200 year old historic Erie Canal runs 363 miles from Albany to Buffalo at Lake Erie to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. Governor DeWitt Clinton began construction in 1817 and opened for operation in 1825. Mules on a towpath pulled canal boats carrying cargo as means of commercial freight transportation. The canal is credited with opening the western interior of the United States and is one of the most important projects of civil engineering.
