A rare and special astronomical event takes place January 20-21, 2019. It is a Super Blood Moon. The Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, which makes it a Super Moon. Simultaneously there is a total lunar eclipse, visible in North and South America and the western portions of Europe and Africa. Other areas in Africa, Europe and Asia will see a partial eclipse. The total lunar eclipse is known as a Blood Moon for its deep red blood-like color during totality. Only some total eclipses of the Moon are also Supermoons. These are especially dramatic and fun to watch in the night sky.
