The awe inspiring main reading room of the US Library of Congress, the nation’s library. This library was established in 1800 by an act of Congress. The original building and its collection were destroyed in the war of 1812. A new collection was created when Congress purchased the books of Thomas Jefferson’s personal library. The Library of Congress now contains more that 32 million cataloged books, 61 million manuscripts , and 3 million sound recordings, among other holdings.
