French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg burning a bank note during a 1984 television broadcast, Serge Gainsbourg is sick of being overtaxed by the government, taxed not for the poor but for nuclear energy. In protest, the singer sets 500 francs on fire during an interview on French TV. Shrugging off the fact that what he's doing is illegal, the defiantly mellow Gainsbourg reminds viewers that “it's my money.†Or at least what's left of it after the ash has fallen away... which is his point.
