Thomas C. Smith and John Carlos, are the celebrated track 1968 Olympian, representing the USA who on the award podium gave the Black Power Fist in recognition and support of civil rights struggles. Although at the time, Tommie Smith and John Carlos were accused to politicizing the Olympics, their protest on the awards podium over time has become much respected. Tommie Smith and John Carlos both were athletes at San Jose State University, and the campus has honored them with capturing the moment in history with a mosaic statue on its campus. This particular image is a black and white cropped view of the memorial statue, taken on a visit to the San Jose State University campus.
