This design features the flag of Connecticut, which is the southernmost state in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Rhode Island to the east, Massachusetts to the north, New York to the west and Long Island Sound to the south. According to most sources, it is part of New England, although large portions of it are often grouped with New York and New Jersey as the tri-state area instead. The state is named for the Connecticut River which approximately bisects the state. The name "Connecticut" is derived from the Native American (Mohegan-Pequot) word for "long tidal river". The official nickname of Connecticut is the "Constitution State", but it is also known as the "Nutmeg State", the "Provisions State" or the "Land of Steady Habits". Its Latin motto is "Qui transtulit sustinet", which means "He who transplanted sustains". The flag of the state of Connecticut contains a baroque shield with three grapevines, each bearing three bunches of purple grapes on a field of royal blue. The capital of Connecticut is Hartford and the state's most populous city is Bridgeport. Other major cities in Connecticut include New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Norwalk, Danbury, New Britain, Bristol, Meriden, West Haven and Milford.
