This design features the unofficial flag of New England. It is intended to represent the six states of New England (or historical New England Colonies). New England is a region comprising six states in the northeastern United States: Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The eastern white pine (Pinus strobus) is shown in the top-left corner of the flag, because it is the most common symbol of New England and often represents that tree's former importance in shipbuilding and New England's maritime culture.
