It is a member of the cichlid family and is native to parts of Africa and Eurasia. It is highly adaptable and tolerates varying water qualities and are tolerant of a wide range of temperatures and salinities, even surviving marine conditions. It is a herbivorous and feeds on leaves and stems of underwater plants as well as algae and vegetative debris. It can reach a maximum length of 40cm (about 16 inches) and a maximum published weight of 300g (.66 pound).
