It is a large cichlid fish endemic to the San Juan River and adjacent watersheds in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. It is more common to be found in lakes rather then rivers. Most fish of this kind, outside of their native zone, were probably introduced from by an aquarium owner.. It can reach over 35 cm (1 foot) in length, and can weigh over 1.14 grams (2.5 pounds).
