St George Fighting the Dragon Poster Affiliate icon

This is a reproduction of Raphael’s St. George and the Dragon which was painted between 1504 and 1506. The work was probably commissioned y Guidobaldo da Montegeltro, the duke of Urbino, Raphael’s native city. The occasion was the duke’s being inducted into the Order of the Garter by Henry VII of England. The painting was presented to Henry and St. George wears the blue ribbon of the order in the painting. The original measures 11.2 by 8.5 inches and is an oil on wood. It is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C. It has been possessed by patrons in England, France, Russia and America. Raphael was about twenty-two when he completed the painting and this was during the period when he was often in residence in Urbino, Florence and other northern Italian cities.
