A snapshot of satellites orbiting Earth showing the names of those that are active (blue) and defunct (red). The prominent outer ring is occupied by geostationary communications satellites, all 35,786 kilometres above the equator. Satellites for global positioning and navigation are found in Medium Earth orbits and most satellites occupying orbits close to the Earth. The Moon, the Earth's natural satellite, orbits approximately nine times further away than the geostationary satellites.
