Evolution, No. 15, Group IV, The Seven-pointed Stars (1907) | Original artwork by Hilma af Klint (1862-1944). Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist and one of the pioneers of abstract art. She was born on October 26, 1862, in Stockholm, Sweden, and died on October 21, 1944. Af Klint's work was groundbreaking for its time and predates the more widely recognized abstract artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. Af Klint initially trained as a traditional artist at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm. However, she soon became interested in spiritualism, theosophy, and the occult, which greatly influenced her artistic direction. She became involved with a group of women artists called "The Five," who explored spiritualism and mediumship. Af Klint's abstract work was heavily influenced by her spiritual beliefs and her participation in séances, during which she claimed to receive messages from higher spirits. She believed that her art was a means of communicating with the spiritual realm and sought to depict the invisible forces of the universe in her paintings.
