Japanese Wisteria, or Wisteria floribunda, belongs to the Pea family (Fabaceae) and blooms in spring. Native to Japan, these lilac purple woody climbers were introduced to the U.S. in 1830. In the U.S. they are mainly found in the east. Wisteria is often cultivated on the porches, walls, arches and fences for decoration. In the language of flowers, wisteria represents "over passionate love" or "obsession."
