Lí Ban Glass Coaster
Là Ban was a 6th century Irish princess. She & her dog were the sole survivors of a great flood, which created Lough Neagh. After a year living in a cave under the lake, she prayed and was turned into a mermaid with a salmon tail, her dog was transformed into an otter. They made it to the sea, and swam for 300 years until she was caught in a net by a monk, Beoan. She told him her story and agreed to meet him in a year. When they met, she was given a choice of being baptized and immediately going to heaven, or swimming for 300 years more in the sea. She chose the former, was baptized “Muirgenâ€, and died. She was canonized in the Irish Church as St. Muirgen, her feast day is January 27. Some pagans revere her as a sea goddess.
