The KC-135 Stratotanker is a military aerial refueling aircraft developed for the U.S. Air Force (USAF) in the 1950s.It is the successor to the KC-97 and is used for air-to-air refueling and cargo and troop transport. The Stratotanker, which entered service in 1957 as part of the 93rd Bomb Wing's 93rd Aerial Refueling Wing, was used primarily to refuel B-47s and B-52 strategic bombers, and was also used extensively in the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. They have played an important role in supporting all U.S. combat operations since the late 1960s, and their radius of operations has been greatly expanded by aerial refueling. In the U.S. Air Force, with an average age of more than 50 years, this type of aircraft is, along with the B-52, the oldest aircraft still in service.
