Cinnabar, also know as Vermilion, is a saturated, warm red or scarlet pigment, originally made from the powdered mineral cinnabar. It was widely used in the art and decoration of Ancient Rome, in the illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages, in the paintings of the Renaissance, and in the art and lacquerware of China, where it's called "Chinese Red". The first recorded use of vermilion as a color name in English was in 1289.
