Almost twelve feet tall in the frame, this notorious Nymphs and Satyr painting dominated a wall at Manhattan's Hoffman House Bar, New York City. The voluptuous image that scandalized Victorian society was used on Hoffman House cigar boxes, licensed to appear on saloon signs and in advertisements for whisky and tobacco products. After the bar closed in 1901 the painting was purchased and hidden from public view until 1942 when it became part of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute collection. An interior view of the Hoffman House Bar in 1890, with this painting installed on the right hand wall (opposite the large mirror), can be viewed here . . . goo.gl/VphBKK. From an original 19th century (1873) painting by Adolphe Bouguereau. All Rights Reserved © 2014 padre art
