Compsognathus was long believed to have been the smallest nonavian dinosaur, at roughly the size of a chicken. It was later discovered that the specimen these claims were based off was only a juvenile. In reality Compsognathus could grow to be a bit over three feet long...still not large, but not the smallest. The Compsognathus in this watercolor, by Christopher DiPiazza, has captured an Archaeopteryx chick.
