Lamassu, (also known as Man Headed Winged Bull, or Lion), were colossal statues placed in pairs, at each side of the entrance of ancient Assyrian palaces, as protective guardians from evil spirits. The crown represented royalty, the human head represented intelligence, the body of a bull (or lion) represented worldly power, and the wings of an eagle represented heavenly aspirations. Those statues had five legs, (creating a visual illusion when looked upon from different angles). A person entering the palace would see the front two legs of the bull in a stationary position, while on the way out, he would see the side view of the bull with its four legs in a walking pose, implying that to enter the palace, a person was required to stop and get the permission from the guards first, but on the way out, no permission was needed. The 4-Pointed Star emitting rays that sustain life on earth, is that of Shamash (or the Sun). Later in Christianity, this symbolism was paralleled in the four Evangelists, where St. Matthew was associated with the image of a human, St. Mark with a lion, St. Luke with a bull, and St. John with an eagle, those creatures when combined they form the Lamassu.
