The freedom loving feline stars in the children's story The Cat That Walks By Himself by Rudyard Kipling first featured in the 1902 edition of his Just So stories for children. Unlike the dog, the independent moggy refuses to be tamed by Man or Woman, announcing: 'I am not a friend and I am not a servant. I am the Cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me.'
