This is a reproduction of the “Faleen Demon Prostrate” by Mikhail Vrubel of 1902. This native of Omsk created this masterpiece when he was forth-six years old. Though numbered as a leading light of Russian Symbolism and Art Nouveau, he actually stood aloof from contemporary Schools of Art. Instead he apperas to have been heavilly influenced by Late Byzantine and Early Renaissance painting. When he produced this masterpiece, Vrubel was designing sets and costumes for the opera Pan. In 1904 he suffered a severe nervous breakdown and became increasingly ill until he ceased painting in 1906. He died on April 14, 1910. This magnificent work is in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It caused a senssation when exhibited, particularly when Vrubel kept repainting the demon’s face.
