The fort was heroically, but unsuccessfully defended against a brutual artillery assault by British war ships and artillery in 1777, but held long enough to delay British supplies for Gen. Howe, and enable Washington and his troops to reach Valley Forge for the winter. The battle may well have saved America! They never surrendered!
