This 1936 painting by African American artist, Archibald Motley, demonstrates why Motley was considered one of the most important artists of the Harlem Renaissance, which was also known as the "New Negro Movement" during the 1920s and 1930s. Motley was known for capturing the vibrancy and struggles of American American life in America during his time.
