This vibrant, colorful poster of folk art tells the story of Greenwood, Oklahoma, the thriving Black community of the early 1900s known as The Black Wall Street. This prominent enclave included PhDs, attorneys, doctors, pilots, successful entrepreneurs and professionals-many who were multi-millionaires. At the height of its success, Greenwood had over 600 businesses:21 churches, 21 restaurants, 30 grocery stores, two movie theaters, a hospital, bank, post office, several libraries, schools, 2 airports, 6 private planes and a well established bus system. By 1921, Greenwood was home to about 10,000 African Americans with the dollar circulating 35 to 100 times before leaving the community-sometimes taking as long a year.
