Vintage artwork by William Henry Hamilton Trood features a scene with a group of dogs of various sizes and breeds who are watching on the sidelines as if they're at a sporting match. In the middle of the room, two dogs battle it out in a game of tug of war, each one pulling on the end of a toy to see who will be the victor. The English artist and sculptor, William Henry Hamilton Trood (1848-1899) loved animals, and especially dogs. He once owned so many dogs that were kept in his backyard that his neighbors complained of the noise. He then kept his dogs inside, along with a fox, an otter and a badger which all were able to run loose in his home. Dog portraits became popular at the time that Queen Victoria had portraits painted of many of her 70+ dogs which she owned near the end of her life. Trood had an extremely successful career painting portraits of pet dogs for clients. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere. This card is blank inside for your own message.
