This oil on canvas from 1884, painted early in Van Gogh's career, depicts a stoneware jug (the Bearded Man Jar), an earthenware apothecary jar that carries the inscription COCHLEAR, a coffee mill, and a pipe case. As a pharmaceutical agent, cochlear (cochlearia officinalis), because of its high vitamin C content, was prescribed as a cure for scurvy.
