Van Gogh voluntarily checked himself into an asylum in France in 1889 and there painted Irises,taking inspiration from the gardens all around him.He died in 1890,but not before creating almost 130 paintings during his stay there. Van Gogh’s brother Theo,submitted Irises to the annual exhibition of The Societe Des Artistes Independants and wrote to Van Gogh saying ‘The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life’ In 1987,Irises became the most expensive painting ever sold,setting a record which stood for two and a half years.Irises was re-sold in 1990 to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles
