Books take flight in Doctor Syntax's Library. “The Doctor’s Dream” by Thomas Rowlandson from The Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque. Thomas Rowlandson (1756 -1827) was one of Britain’s greatest caricaturists and satirists. “Dr. Syntax” was the product of a collaboration between Rowlandson and the author William Combe who wrote up Dr. Syntax's adventures as a series of long poems which first appeared in serial form in 1809 in the Poetical Magazine. In the stories, Dr. Syntax, a white-wigged schoolmaster and curate, sets off on a white mare and runs into all kinds of trouble and adventure. The Dr. Syntax series is sometimes considered a precursor of the modern comic strip.
