Pensive Jesus _ Rupintojelis Vilkija LITHUANIA _ Plaque Affiliate icon

In Lithuania, people refer to these wood folk art statues of Jesus Christ as Rupintojelis, or "the One Who Worries." Lithuanian folk sculptures and crosses are somewhat unique to Lithuania, not being common in neighboring countries. Carvings of the Pensive Jesus, or Sorrowful Jesus started to appear in the 1500s, when pagan Lithuanians began to accept Christianity. As a people who have suffered a great deal at the hands of invaders throughout most of their history, Lithuanians identify with this image. This carving resides in Vilkija, Lithuania at the Church of St. George.
